Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His life was pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was mainly to care for his flock of rams.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.

Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The check here scared villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank laughed for a few more days. But, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
